GameStop pulling out of Northern Ireland. Effective immediately
A source close to TheGamingLiberty has confirmed that high street retailer GameStop has relinquished trading in Northern Ireland, effective immediately.
Employees were reportedly told yesterday (Sunday January 22nd) that the retailer is to cease trading in the North. Consumers were greeted by re-direct posters at GS’s flagship store in Belfast today (see above) informing gamers that business will now be transferred to their website at GameStop.co.uk.
We’ve contacted GameStop for comment, so hopefully they can issue us with some kind of statement in the morning to clear things up for us. If you visit the retailer’s online store locator for the island of Ireland, only one store remains in the North, that being GS’s Newry operation. However, we can confirm that the Newry Store has also been closed.
We understand that management at the retailer have signed non-disclosure agreements agreeing to keep GameStop’s departure from the North under wraps until an official statement is made by the company. A number of employees have taken to Twitter and Facebook to confirm that they have been made redundant. However, given the situation, we will not link to them and their comments at this time. GS customers have also taken to the retailer’s Irish and UK Facebook pages to confirm the store closures around the province.
GS are promising to honour all outstanding deposits and gift cards on their official website at www.gamestop.co.uk.
“GameStop UK: We are transferring all of our UK business on-line to www.gamestop.co.uk. We will honour all outstanding deposits and gift cards on www.gamestop.co.uk please contact – help@gamestop.co.uk for further assistance.”
As soon as we get more on this story, we will get it to you.
